B Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books --- especially paperbacks（平装本）, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper and bound（装订）between hard covers.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock（贮存）, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the myriad（无数的）subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet! Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand volumes, the collector must venture （敢于去）off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. Instead, the booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small barrows（流动集售货车） which line the gutters（贫民窟）. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs（业余爱好者）, have been waiting for them. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old volume that may be worth many pounds. 31. “Londoners are great readers” means that _________. A. Londoners are great because they read a lot. B. There are a great number of readers in London C. Londoners are readers who read only great books D. Londoners read a lot 32. Charring Cross Road ________. A. is in the suburbs of London B. is famous for its bookshops C. contains various kinds of shops D. is the busiest street in London
33. If you want to buy really cheap second-hand books, you must ________. A. venture in a most busy street B. venture away from a busy street C. take the risk of going to the beaten track D. take the risk of wasting time to hunt them in less noticeable streets 34. The book sellers on Farringdon Road _________. A. keep fine bookshops
B. keep only small bookshops C. sell books on hand-carts D. sell the same books as the bookshops on Charring Cross Road 35. The best topic for this passage is ________. A. bookshops in London B. the biggest bookshop in the world C. Charring Cross Road D. buying books in London
C “A rolling stone gathers no moss (苔藓),” but there is one living animal that does gather moss — the three-toed sloth（树懒）of South America. This slowest-moving member of the animal kingdom is so inactive that moss actually gathers on its body and turns it green — strange as it seems! Most of the sloth’s life is spent motionless, hanging upside down from a limb（大树枝）. And that is the way its hair grows. Long and coarse, the strands from receptacles for the damp jungle algae （藻类） turn the brown fur a mossy green. Actually this moss helps the animal survive because it serves as a perfect camouflage against the leafy trees and hides the sloth from the jungle’s swift-moving hunters. The sloth would have little chance of survival on the ground. With long, curved claws hooded over the limb of a leafy tree, it spends the long hot hours during the day drowsing and eating. Inch by inch, it strips the leafy limbs bare and crawls slowly down the trunk to find a new dining spot, but only at night. In addition to looking rather like a vegetable, the sloth is a strict vegetarian. Running out of its favorite leaf is about the only thing that will make a sloth move. Then its appetite（食欲） may even force the animal into swimming a stream to reach a succulent（肉质植物）. It will also force it into fighting to keep the tree all to itself. The sloth is lazy and prefers to be alone, but it will tolerate its own relatives! 36. A suitable title for this passage might be ____. A. Wild Animals B. Animal Kingdom C. Moss Growth D. The Lazy Animal
37.The author’s purpose in writing the passage is _____. A. to help children to gain a better understanding of animal life
B. to prove that the saying “a rolling stone gathers no moss” is wrong C. to introduce a particular animal to the common reader D. to discuss with professionals the laziness of some animals 38.Which of the following is NOT true about the sloth? A. The sloth does not eat any meat. B. For most of its time, the sloth remains motionless on the ground. C. To some degree, the sloth is protected by the moss growing on its body. D. The sloth has a brown fur of its own. 39.According to the passage, the sloth will move about when____. A. It senses a coming danger. C. it is short of its favorite food. B. it is forced to swim in a hot day. D. it wants to keep the vegetable to itself.
40.Which of the following is NOT mentioned or implied by the author? A. The sloth has only three toes. B. The sloth lives in the damp jungle of South America. C. The sloth usually tries to find a new spot for food at night. D. The sloth will never fight with other animals.
D In the future, when robots can be used both in homes and in other areas, they could improve the living standards of people. Many people burn their energy on their day-to-day tasks like cooking, cleaning after work, etc. When robots can complete such jobs, people can spend more time with their family and friends. Experts say that many major problems in the modern world are caused by miscommunication. When people have more time, they can talk freely to solve such issues and eventually create a happy society. Robots can be used on certain jobs to avoid accidents caused by careless behavior of some people. When robots are used on such work, it does not risk any human life due to accidents at the workplace. Human resources can be efficiently used by performing tasks which demand human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Robots can be used on low-end jobs like moving heavy things and heavy weight lifting. While some people talk about how robots can be useful to humans, others voice their concerns about reduction in human value and the creation of a lazy society due to heavy dependency on
robots. When robots become cheaper to produce, employers may prefer to use more robots than humans. As the technology constantly improves the abilities of robots, it could weaken the value of humans. Many people may rely on robots heavily. Some may even develop the habit of using robots on tasks that they can easily do. This could create a lazy society. As an aging society, Japan sees it a must to build robots that take care of elderly people at their home, because without them, the nation’s health care system can’t cope. There will simply be too many elderly people to care for as the nation faces a decreasing birth rate, an aging population, and the loosening of family ties. However, many of Japan’s elderly people would prefer human helpers rather than robots. Above all, Japan wants, if not “needs”, its immigration(移民) policy is anti-immigration. In conclusion, robots can be used on anything that can eventually improve humans’ living standards but we can’t depend on them too much. Robots can be used to help humans live in harmony and form a happy society. 41. According to the first paragraph, when robots can be used in homes,________ A. people will spend more time on their work.. B. people’s living standards will be improve. C. there would be more misunderstandings between humans. D. people may communicate more with robots than human beings. 42. Compared with humans, robots are better at __________ A. problem solving. C. working safely. B. communicating with others. D. critical thinking.
43. Some people worry that with more robots being used ________ A. people will be unwilling to work hard. B. human resources won’t be needed at the workplace. C. it will be harder to improve the abilities of robots. D. robots will be beyond our control. 44. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. The robots are well received by elderly people in Japan. B. The Japanese government encourages foreigners to move to Japan. C. Most Japanese citizens are against robots in the home. D. Japan will try to develop robots to be used in the home.
45. Which statement is the author’s opinion on robots? A. Robots bring us more problems than benefits. B. The future of robots is worrying. C. Robots can help us a lot but we need to use them properly. D. We should limit the development of robotic technology. A. Smoking also has been linked to heart disease and many kinds of cancers. Smoking affects not only health of the smoker, but also the health of people who do not smoke. The article mainly talks about the harmful effects of smoking. Nicotine, for example, is the cause of lung cancer. Besides, cigarette can make smokers depend on them, which does great harm to people’s health. Therefore, it is the best for you to quit smoking right now. To stop smoking, at the beginning, you should carefully plan your actions for at least one year. Try to stay away from people and situations that might trouble you. Besides, do not go to public places where people are smoking. In the first week or two without cigarettes, you will probably feel terrible. When you feel nervous and stressed, you can take a deep breath and do some relaxation exercise. In addition, if you give up smoking, you can save a lot of money for our family so that we can do some sports together happily. Also, our family need not worry about health problems caused by smoking. Dad, I know quitting smoking may be a tough task for you. But you will win the struggle against smoking, I believe. Yours sincerely Lucy
