I was traveling back home from a family visit, and after treating me to breakfast and filling my car with gas, it was obvious that my dad wanted to make sure that I would be okay on the road. “No, Dad. You've done so much already. Thank you!” I was overwhelmed once again by his kind acts of providing everything I needed, although I turned 40. Yet I realize that in my father's eyes, I will always be his little girl. He takes deep pleasure in knowing his children are all right. Now that he has enough money, he loves to give whenever he sees a need. But this was not always the case. Divorced from my mother when I was 11, my dad couldn't be around his kids as often as he would have liked. Money was also tight; even weekend visits were rare. However, my dad stayed in constant communication with us and made sure he was involved in our lives. Though he couldn't always be there in person, I knew he was only a phone call away. I could always make sure of that. Even now, almost 30 years later, I treasure knowing that I can pick up the phone and call Dad, and he'll be there for me. I have a wonderful husband, but that hasn't changed how Dad sees me. I'm still his child and he loves to see that my needs are met. I remember a time when I was shopping in a hardware store (五金店) with Dad. I mentioned my plans to paint one wall in my house. Well, that's all it took for Dad to take action. By the time I got to the checkout(结账) line, all the supplies I picked out were put out of my hands and placed with things he bought. Then there was the time when I took him with me to do some grocery shopping for just a few “ items”. By the time we were finished, my shopping cart was full of groceries from every shelf in the store! My sister and I joke that if you don't want Dad to buy it for you, avoid even mentioning you want something. 21. What's the best title for the passage? A. Father's generosity B. Father's considerate love C. The love for children D. Love's power 22. The author demonstrates her father's love for her mainly by______. A. suggestion B. reasoning C. examples D. argument 23. Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone oxytocin (荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently. "Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men lend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status," said Professor Ryan. Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions such as falling in love or giving birth. But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy. Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship. Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(参与者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰剂). After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material. Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions. The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.

Professor Ryan thus concluded: "Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish (区分,辨别) different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors that are mainly hormonal." 28. What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text? A. Placebo. B. The gesture. C. Oxytocin. D. The social status. 29. What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment? A. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way. B. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success. C. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love. D. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences. 30. Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment? A. To test people's understanding of body language. B. To know the differences between friendship and competition. C. To know people's different abilities to answer questions. D. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions. 31. The author develops the text by______. A. discussing research experiments B. describing his own experiences C. distinguishing sexual differences D. explaining people's behaviors D As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.? Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.? The amount of stress a person can withstand (忍受) depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities; others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crisis we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Since we can’t remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could) ,we need to find ways to deal with it.? 32. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ______.? A. they regard working as their greatest enjoyment? B. they believe that work is superior to relaxation? C. they are becoming busier with their work than ever before D. they are traveling fast all the time? 33. According to the author, the most important character for a good manager is his ______.? A. having control over performance? B. knowing the art of relaxation? C. high sense of responsibility? D. strong will to hold out stress 34. In the last sentence of the passage, the underlined words “do so” refers to ______.? A. “expose ourselves to stress”? B. “remove stress from our lives” C. “find ways to deal with stress”? D. “establish links between diseases and stress”? 35. According to the author, the right attitude toward stress is ______. A. to try to cope with it ? B. to avoid it C. to regard it as a vital motivation? D. to find some relaxation? 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 36 You can find it on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and trash cans from Tokyo to Paris, from Moscow to Cape Town. Street art has become a global culture. Even art museums and galleries are collecting the works of street artists. Street art started very secretly because it was illegal to paint on public and private property without permission. 37 Some think it is a crime and others think it is a very beautiful new form of culture. Art experts say that the street art movement began in New York in the 1960s. Young

adults painted words and other images on the walls and trains. This colourful style of writing became known as graffiti(涂鸦), whose art showed that young people wanted to rebel against society. Street artists do their work for different reasons. 38 They choose street art because it is closer to the people. Some artists try to express their political opinion in their works. Others like to do things that are not allowed and hope they can’t be caught. Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impressions of youth and energy. 39 Artists can show their pictures to people all over the world. Many people, however, say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it alive. 40 There, it will continue to change and grow. A. Some of them do not like artists who make so much money in galleries and museums. B. In today’s world, the Internet has a big influence on street art. C. Inorder to protect our Chinese characters and improve our handwriting, we’d like to offer some suggestions: First, we should spend less time online so that we can have more timeto re ad books. Besides, we’d better form the habit of keeping diaries every day to practice handwriting. What’s more, it is better to write letters to o ur relatives and friends by hand rather than send e-mails.
