This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes. Mariko Okada – Tokyo My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that: I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future. Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home! Alvin Chen – Hong Kong Studying in New Zealand was an interesting experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went! 21. That cold January night, it seemed I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night atthe same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment buildingand unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside," Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look inhis eyes. “Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but Ihad
gotmy wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were welling to help each other. 24. How did the write feel when she was walking home after work? A. Cold and sick B. Lucky and helpful C. Satisfied and cheerful D. Disappointed and helpless 25. In the fifth paragraph, why did the writer say she was dreaming? A. Someone offered to take her back home. B. A red-haired man came to see her. C. She heard someone call her name D. Her wallet was found in a garbage truck. 26. From the text, we can infer that the writer _______. A. would stop working at night B. would stay on in San Francisco C. would make friends with cleaners D. would give up her job at the bank. 27. The text is developed ________. A. by comparison B. by space C. by example D. by time
C According to a Chinese agency, the number of people signing up for Japan tours during the National Holiday of 2015 doubled that in the previous year. Are you also planning a trip to Japan? No doubt you’ve planned visits to key attractions(景点) in Tokyo, Osaka or other major cities. Good, they’ll be worth the trip and any major city can offer more enjoyable cities than you’ll have time to see. A number of travel agencies can provide lists of popular attraction for amazing shopping, nightlife and fine dining unlike any other place on earth. Having traveled in large cities, and the countryside, however, I feel like sharing a few thoughts
With first-time visitors to Japan. If you wish to make a true cultural experience than nothing beats visiting the countryside, where there are rental (出租) car companies providing service for tourists because no tour buses will stop there. Don’t worry about running on the “wrong side” because you’ll quickly become used to it. Precautions(告诫): you’ll need to take a “personal adventure level” reading before startingthis trip. Unless you speak some Japanese, communication will be very limited. Most Japanese do not speak conversational English. This especially true once you leave the cities behind. Lodging(借宿), dining and even getting gas will take more effort. It was challenging but just as rewarding: I do suggest that others learn some Japanese first, though. Benefits: even if you travel for a short time in the countryside, you’ll have many exciting stories which are more interesting than those of any friends who stayed on guided tours. The best part of the trip is-I can’t tell you what they will be. Just make an effort to communicate with those around you and see everything with your own eyes. You will find that as a whole the Japanese are friendly to foreign visitors. Along your country journey you’ll find people who have never met a foreigner and have many questions for you, shops selling items you have never seen and restaurants with short menus serving delicious Japanese food. It’s these simple people you’ll meet that you’ll most remember. 28. For whom is the passage written? A. Visitors who want to do shopping in Japan. B. Visitors who want to enjoy nightlife in Japan. C. Visitors who want to learn about Japanese culture. D. Visitors who want to enjoy popular attractions in Japan. 29. How can you visit small towns in Japan? A. By tour bus. B. By car. C. By ship. D. By air.
30. According to the passage, to make your visit to small towns pleasant, you are advised to _____. A. choose a better travel agency B. read as many books about Japan as possible C. learn about more rules for lodging and dining D. learn some Japanese to make communication easier 31. The underlined sentence suggests that the travel in the countryside _____. A． will bring you many unexpected surprises
B． will be interesting with a guide leading you C． is often well planned and organized D. will make sure you get the best service
