Marita Davies was on her way home from a party when the crash happened. The car that Marita took as a passenger was going the wrong way and crashed into another car driven by a drunken driver named David Hudson, which left her with a broken leg and back. It took the firefighters more than two hours to free the teenager from the damaged car before she was taken to hospital. Marita was in a wheelchair for a year after being bed-ridden for nine months. Marita feared her dream of a modeling career was over. She said, “I was extremely upset and shocked when I knew about my terrible injuries. I thought my dream of becoming a model was over. My leg and back were broken. The crash had broken my confidence and I became quiet and spent less time with other people. I was 16, and at that age all I wanted to do was go out with my friends.” But as her health took a turn for the better, Marita finally came out of the wheelchair and learned to walk. She decided she would still try to follow her dreams, and sent some photos off to some modeling agencies. She did a few unpaid jobs while studying at college. They wanted to end the Vietnam War and to make all of the people in the U.S. equal. Some of them decided to “drop out” of American society and form their own societies. They formed utopian communities, which they called “communes(公社),” where they could follow their philosophy of “do your own thing”. A group of artists founded a commune in southern Colorado called “Drop City”. Following the ideas of philosopher and architect Buckminster Fuller, they built dome-shaped(圆顶形) houses from pieces of old cars. Other groups, such as author Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters, the followers of San Francisco poet Steve Gaskin, and a group that called itself the Hog Farm, lived in old school houses and traveled around the United States. The Hog Farm become famous when they helped organize the Woodstock Rock Festival in 1969. The followers of Steve Gaskin tried to settle down on a farm in Tennessee, but they had to leave when some members of the group were arrested for growing marijuana(大麻). Not all communes believed in the philosophy of “do your own thing”, however. Twin Oaks, a commune founded in Virginia in the late 1960s, was based on the ideas of psychologist B. F. Skinner. The people who lived at Twin Oaks were carefully controlled by Skinner ’s conditioning techniques to do things that were good for the community. In 1972, Italian architect Paolo Soleri began to build Arcosanti, a utopian city in Arizona, where 2500 people will live closely together in one large building called an “archology”. Soleri believes that people must live closely together so that they will all become one. 31. Why did some young Americans decide to “drop out” of society during the 1960s? A. The film began during the period of economic reforms in China in the 1980s. Wang was the first to be granted the visa but he gave it up for his western girlfriend, and Cheng was repeatedly denied. Only Meng actually got a study visa. As he was leaving, he told his friends that he wouldn’t come back. Several years later, Cheng and Wang built a successful school, New Dream, from the ashes of Cheng’s misfortune(his girlfriend got a visa too, and Cheng lost his university teaching job) and Wang’s ability to connect with students often through Hollywood movies. In America, Meng suffered a lot. Disappointed, he went home and joined his friends at New Dream. D Getting sick overseas can be scary. You’re in an unfamiliar place and often don’t speak the language. Although each trip is different, there are universal things you can do to keep safe. Be prepared. “Schedule a visit with a doctor who specializes in travel or the area you’re visiting at least four weeks before your departure,” says WHO public health expert Dr. Gilles Poumerol. A travel doctor will be able to give you the required and recommended vaccinations(接 种疫苗) as well as discuss any medical issues you may come across abroad. Get insurance. “In many countries where you have limited access to health care, good health care is only found in the private sector and can be very expensive,” Dr. Poumerol says. Plus, in an emergency, returning to the United States can cost more than $50,000. Ask your health insurance company whether your policy applies overseas and whether it will cover trips to a foreign hospital. If not, there are many companies that offer short-term travel health insurance for a reasonable fee. A list can be found on the US State Department’s travel website. Pack well. Dr. Poumerol also suggests bringing a note from your doctor in English and the language of the country you’re visiting. Packing an emergency contact list is important. Contacts should include the local embassy(使馆), relatives who should be informed if you get sick and your health insurance company. Be care. You have to be in charge of your health. If you’re being treated abroad, question the medical staff about their sterilization(杀菌) practices; injection (注射) equipment should be put in boiling water for at least 30 minutes or used only once. Also be sure that doctors and nurses are wearing gloves to prevent fluid transfer. Limiting your alcohol intake will keep you focused on your safety. These have included ceremonies, concerts, competitions, extra training meetings for teachers and cultural and sports events. However, many countries have their own Teachers’ Day. In some countries, the gratitude to teachers is expressed on a day with a different name. For example, in Bulgaria, teachers are honored on “Education Day”. In China, September 28, the date of Confucius birth(孔子诞辰), was once chosen as Teachers’ Day. Confucius was the model master educator in ancient China. In 1985, the date was changed to September 10. In America, it was until 1980 that Congress declared a National Teacher Day. 基础写作 One possible version Statistics reveal that about 40% to 60% of the citizens in our country suffer from tooth decay while more children are stricken by such disease with a ratio of 70%. Many factors are responsible for this disease, but food and dietary habits may be the most important factors. Therefore, we are supposed to balance our food, eat more vegetables rich in fibers, fruit, milk and so on, instead of sugar. Next, brush teeth both in the morning and after meals, especially before going to bed. In addition, we should take regular medical tooth check so that we can cure the disease in time once we are found carrying bad teeth in our month. 读写任务 One possible version From the passage we know that World Teachers’ Day is celebrated by more than 100 countries and many countries such as China and America have their own Teachers’ Day to express their thankfulness to teachers. As is known to all, the career as a teacher is one of the most important careers under the sun. They shoulder the responsibility of educating the next generation who are the future builders of our society. Therefore, setting a date to honor the contributions teachers make to education is of great significance. The 29th Teachers’ Day has just passed. On that day, we sent our teachers postcards with everyone’s best wishes. What was special was that the cards were made with our own hands instead of being bought from the store. We knew from the teacher ’s expressions that they appreciated such beautifully-made cards very much. As far as I’m concerned, not only should we students show our respect for our teachers on the Teachers’ Day, but we also should respect them on other days. Personally, working hard and listening to the teacher attentively in class are the best way to express our gratitude to them. Furthermore, saying hello and smiling at them when meeting them are also good ways.
