When water is freezes and turns to ice, it expands. The force of water expanding is so great that it will break the hardest metal. Water is used in car engines to keep them cool while they run, and if this water is allowed to freeze in winter it can break the iron block of the engine. That is why antifreezes are necessary. Water freezes at the 0℃: the usual kind of antifreeze will not freeze until the temperature is 40℃ below zero. A mixture of 5 parts of water and 4 parts of antifreeze will prevent freezing at 18℃ below zero; 4 parts of water and 5 parts of antifreeze reduce this to 22℃ below zero. Alcohol(酒精)is a good antifreeze, but when the car is running it becomes hot and the alcohol boils away, so it must be replaced very often. Most people use antifreezes that do not boil away when the engine is running. There are several chemicals that do this. One of the most popular is called ethylene glycol(乙二醇), which is sold under various trade names such as Preston and Zerex. 51. Antifreezes are useful in that they _____. A. keep the alcohol from boiling away B. can prevent ice from melting C. keep water liquid in cold weather D. can raise the freezing point of water 52. The text is written _____. A. to help to sell antifreezes B. to explain what antifreezes are C. to compare ethylene glycol with alcohol D. to tell how to choose the best antifreeze 53. Preston and Zerex are _____. Prize in Literature. The academy praised the Chinese writer for what it called his “hallucinatory realism.” It noted his ability to combine folk stories, history and modern events in his works. An academy official said Mr. Mo said he was “overjoyed and scared” when he learned he had won the award. He will receive his Nobel diploma, a medal and more than one million dollars at a ceremony in Stockholm in December. Mo Yan is a leading author of modern Chinese novels. He often writes from memories of his youth. He also sets many of his stories in the area where he was born –---- Shandong Province in northeastern China. Mr. Mo’s 1987 book “Red Sorghum,” is an example. It is about the extreme violence in rural eastern China during the Communist Revolution in the 1920s and 1930s. The story describes the criminal culture of the time, Japan’s occupation and the terrible conditions faced by farm workers. “Red Sorghum” was later made into a movie. Mo Yan’s other major works include, “Big Breasts and Wide Hips, “Republic of Wine” and “Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.” The Royal Swedish Academy compared him to two twentieth century writers: American William Faulkner and Colombia’s Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mo Yan is fifty-seven. His real name is Guan Moye. Mo Yan means “Don’t Speak.” The writer said he chose the name to remember to stop his tongue from getting him in trouble. Only one other Chinese-language writer has won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Gao Xingjian was honored in 2000. However, he had been living in France for some time. And China banned his books because they were critical of the Chinese government. But China is celebrating the victory of this native son. Minutes after the award was announced, millions of Chinese expressed pleasure and pride for Mo Yan on social media websites. 54. Which section do you think the passage can be listed in a magazine? A. Our world B. Current affairs C. Culture and leisure D. Amusement world C Why do parents have such a difficult time to communicate openly and honestly with their teens? For this, there are many reasons but most of them stem from not being able to properly understand their teens. It is a dangerous gap because parents will have to communicate with their teens about a wide variety of issues during the most important years of their lives. Thus, parents must know how to communicate openly and honestly with their teens.
5

Here are a few tips to make communication easier between parents and teenagers. (1) Try not to talk down to your teens. Make them feel as if their views really matter, which not only helps your discussions with your teen but bring you closer to him. (2) Imagine what it would be like to be a teen. Try to remember some of the negative feelings you experienced as a teenager and apply it to your teen's situation. (3) Never make negative remarks to your teen about what she has said or done. (4) Remember how much courage it would have taken for your teen to come and talk to you about his personal issues. So listen respectfully. (5) Don't ignore your teen's feelings because it is usually a cry for help. For instance, if your teen is unusually angry, it may be time to spend a bit of quality time with your teen to determine what is wrong and where he is coming from. It is, therefore, necessary for parents to strive to keep lines of communication open at all times with their teens. Try to remember what it was like to be a teenager and how vulnerable (脆 弱的)you felt. Then you will be well on your way to help your teen communicate more openly and honestly. 58. Why don't teens want to talk about their personal issues with their parents? A. Because they can't respect their parents. B. Because they can't understand their parents. C. Because their parents won't understand them well. D. Because their parents are not honest. 59. When your son comes to you for help, you should NOT _____. A. listen respectively B. treat him seriously C. care about his feeling D. make negative remarks 60. Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined phrase “talk down to”? A. put down B. look down upon C. chat with D. quarrel with 61. The best title for this passage is _____. A. Causes of generation gap B. Relations between teens and parents C. Suggestions for parents-children effective communication D. Problems with communication between teens and parents D Going to school means learning new skills and facts in different subjects. Teachers teach and students learn, and many scientists are interested in finding ways to improve both teaching and learning processes. Sian Beilock and Susan Leving, two psychologists at the University of Chicago, are trying to learn about learning. In a new study about the way kids learn math in primary school, Beilock and Levine found a surprising relationship between what female teachers think and what female students learn: If a female teacher is uncomfortable with her own math skills, then her female students are more likely to believe that boys are better than girls at math. “If these girls keep getting math-anxious female teachers in later grades, it may create a snowball effect on their math achievement,” Levine told Science News. The study suggests that if these girls grow up believing that boys are better at math than girls are, then these girls may not do as well as they would have if they were more confident. Just as students find certain subjects to be difficult, teachers can find certain subjects to be difficult to learn—and teach. The subject of math can be particularly difficult for everyone. The new study involved 65 girls, 52 boys and 17 first-and second-grade teachers in primary
6

schools in the Midwest. The students took math achievement tests at the beginning and end of the school year, and the researchers compared the scores. The researchers also gave the students tests to tell whether the students believed a math superstar had to be a boy. Then the researchers turned to the teachers: To find out which teachers were anxious about math, the researchers asked the teachers how they felt at times when they came across math, such as when reading a sales receipt(收据). A teacher who got nervous looking at the numbers on a sales receipt, for example, was probably anxious about math. Boys, on average, were unaffected by a teacher’s anxiety. On average, girls with math-anxious teachers scored lower on the end-of-the-year math tests than other girls in the study did. Plus, on the test showing whether someone thought a math superstar had to be a boy, 20 girls showed feeling that boys would be better at math—and all of these girls had been taught by female teachers with math anxiety. According to surveys done before this one, college students who want to become primary school teachers have the highest levels of anxiety about math. Plus, nine of every 10 primary teachers are women, Levine said. 62. Sian Beilock and Susan Levine carried out the new study in order to _____. A. know the effects of teaching on learning B. study students’ ways of learning math C. prove women teachers were unfit to teach math D. find better teaching methods for teachers 63. The underlined part in paragraph 2 most probably means that girls may _____. A. end up math learning anxiety from their teachers B. study the ways their female teachers behave C. have an influence on their math-anxious female teachers D. gain unexpected achievements in such subjects as math 64. What is the finding of the new study? A. No male students were affected by their teachers’ anxiety. B. Almost all the girls got lower scores in the tests than the boys. C. About 30% of the girls thought boys were better at math than girls D. Girls with math-anxious teachers all failed in the math tests. 65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. 117 students and teachers took part in the new study. B. The researchers felt surprised at the findings of their study. C. Beilock and Levine were interested in teaching math. D. Male teachers were better at teaching math than women teachers. Day after day you are glued to your computer screen. You cannot get enough of online games, net shopping or cyber surfing. Your social life gets worse, and so does your health. Chances are that you are addicted to the Internet and you need counseling. On November 8, an Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) diagnostic manual(诊断手册)was

7

approved by a group of psychologists in China, who agreed that Internet addiction is a mental disease. According to a report on Xinhuanet.com, the manual for the first time gives a clear time standard for diagnosing IAD, saying that surfing the Internet for more than six hours a day, not for the purpose of studying or working, and having done so for less than three months, might be a symptom of IAD. Addiction symptoms vary Besides the long online time, some other symptoms would also help doctors diagnose IAD patients, such as having a strong desire for the Internet and feeling physical discomfort, becoming easily angry, being unable to concentrate on things or finding it difficult to sleep if unable to get online. Apart from these conditions, other symptoms are also listed in the manual. If a net surfer cannot get out of the virtual world of Web games, which has already affected his/her capability to study or work, or he/she feels little interest in doing anything but jumping online or is afraid to communicate with others, he/she is also considered to be an IAD sufferer. According to the World Health Organization, mental disease sufferers have two major characteristics: they bring suffering to both themselves and their families, and their abilities to be involved in social activities are affected. Mental illness stigma(污名) However, it has resulted in a backlash(反对)from the public, due to the fact that mental disease is a very sensitive term to Chinese. Many netizens dropped comments expressing their doubts about the manual, saying that they could not accept they might be suffering from mental illness just because they spent too much time on the Internet. Experts said there is a misunderstanding of the manual. Explaining that IAD sufferers are not “crazy people”, they call on society at large to change their understanding of mental disease. Mental disease covers a wide range of psychological or behavioral problems, such as depression.
