第一部分 阅读理解 (共两节，20 小题；每小题 3 分，满分 60 分) 第一小节 (共 15 小题；每小题 3 分，满分 45 分) A Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We don’t normally put them i
n a composition or a letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples. 1) “Once bitten, twice shy.” If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again. 2) “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future. 3) “Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)”. When too many people do something, they get in each other’s way and do a bad job. 4) “To pour oil on troubled waters” is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough. 5) “Don’t be a dog in a manger(槽)”means“ Don’t be selfish.” In a stable (马房 ), the manger is the place where the horse’s food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it. 6) “He is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win. 7) “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the musician will play. Thus this means that if a man
provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out. 8) “You can’t get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor ma n. 1. Peter has a bicycle which is much too small for him but he does not want to let his younger brother ride on it. His mother is angry and says to him: ______. A. You can’t get blood out of a stone C. The early bird gets the worm B. Don’t be a dog in a manger
D. To pour oil on troubled waters
2. Mr. Wang paid for a new school. Some people didn’t like the design of the school but they didn’t argue with Mr. Wang because ______. A. he was sitting on the fence B. once bitten, twice shy
C. he who pays the piper calls the tune D. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush 3. Mrs. Lin wanted to buy a new dress. Her husband suggested that she buy it from a shop near their home. Mrs. Lin disagreed because she had been cheated by that shop. So she said: “I won’t go there again because ______.” A. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush C. once bitten, twice shy B. I am sitting on the fence
D. too many cooks spoil the broth
4. Mr. Brown had quite a good job in Hong Kong but he thought that if he went to Singapore, he might get a much better job with more money and a larger house. His wife didn’t want him to leave his job in Hong Kong and she reminded him that ______. A. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush C. you cannot get blood out of a stone B We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby... Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse(配偶) gets his or her act together, when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vacation and when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
B. too many cooks spoil the broth
D. he who pays the piper calls the tune
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said, “for a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin ---- real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have. And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school; until you go back to school; until you get married; until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy... Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching. 5. Why do we always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby?? A. Because happy life is always in the future. B. Because we don’t realize treasuring every moment means happiness. C. Because no one will be happy until he gets married. D. Because only if we get to a destination, we can lead a happy life. 6. What does the writer want to tell us? A. Time and tide waits for no man, so treasure every moment. B. Will is power, so do what you want to do. C. A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed, so do not talk, just do it. D. So said, so done. So do what you said. 7. According to the text, which of the following is correct? A. Life is bound to become better as we expect. B. You should work because you really need money. C. You shouldn’t dance while others are watching you. D. You should love as if you had not been hurt. Two years ago, the Funk family of suburban Chicago adopted a Chinese baby girl who had been abandoned on a sidewalk near a Yangzhou textile factory. Last year, halfway across the United States，the Ramirez family of suburban Miami adopted a girl who had been abandoned a week later on the same spot.
Both families named their daughters Mia. It turns out, a first name and Chinese heritage aren’t the only things the three?year?olds have in common. The girls’ mothers — Holly Funk and Diana Ramirez — met on a website for parents who had gone through international adoptions. After a lot of emails comparing photographs and biographical details, DNA testing proved the families’ suspicions: the girls are prob ably fraternal(亲如手足的) twins. “I was in shock,” said Ramirez, who lives with her husband Carlos in Pembroke Pines, Florida. “Well, now this is for real.” The Internet and Web groups revolving around international orphanages are increasingly being used to link adopted children with biological kin(亲属). The site that the Funks and Ramirezes used has a membership of 137 people, with 15 sets of twins and 7 sets of siblings (兄弟,姐妹) whose relationships have been confirmed. At a reun ion Friday at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Mia Diamond Funk and Mia Hanying Ramirez shyly surveyed each other, and then reached for each other’s hand. DNA tests establish an 85 percent probability that the girls are at least half?sisters. Scientists do not have a biological parent to test and reach a greater certainty, but given their ages and physical similarities, experts say it is likely they are fraternal twins. Douglas and Holly Funk hope to bring their Mia to Miami in October. Both sets of parents say they are committed to staying in touch and often let the twins talk to each other on the phone. 12. Both the adopted girls shared a first name ________. A. because they both came from China B. because of their physical similarities
C. because their US parents suspected they were twins D. for no good reason 13. Why did the girls’ mothers meet on the Internet? A. To compare photographs of the two girls. C. To test their suspicions. B. To find the girls’ biological kin.
D. To enjoy the joy of adopting children.
14. Experts are still not 100 percent sure that the two girls are fraternal twins because ________. A. DNA tests are still not accurate enough B. the two girls were born in two different families
C. the DNA of a biological parent is still missing D. one girl was born a week later than the other 15. What Ramirez said in Paragraph 4 suggests that she ________. A. didn’t believe what had happened B. was surprised at what had happened
C. didn’t want to accept the fact
D. was pleased with what they had done

I’m one of your customers. I ordered a set of Bookworm Series on your website two weeks ago, but I didn’t receive them until yesterday. And much to my disappointment, the books were so poorly packed up that the cover of one book was torn. To make matters worse, it is not a complete set, as I found one book missing. I’m sorry to have received such poor service, and I believe I have every right to ask you to deal with this problem. I hope that you either return my money or deliver a new set of books to me. Besides, I’d like to be informed of the process of your dealing with my complaint. Looking forward to your reply. Li Hua
