Following Christmas dinner,my family was relaxing around the kitchen table. The goodcooking smells still stayed. My sister, our chef, was enjoying the compliments. 一 “Delicious meal!” “Everything was wonderful. ”Dad had risen from his chair and was contentedly standing nearby. My nephew, never one to sit still for too long, began playing his new basketball around the table and throughout the kitchen.Upon nearing Dad,he stopped——almost uncertainly. With shaking, wrinkled hands,Dad had reached out for the ball. He did not speak, and the boy, confused, looked up and over at us.It took some convincing, but the ball was lightly passedover. I watched my father closely to see what he would do . A playful smile appeared on his face.Holding the ball and reaching forward,Dad bounced it on the floor then caught it.This action was repeated.Nodding approvingly,he then turned towards our assembled group.Gently throwing the ball away,Dad began a game of catch. The ball continued to be passed though eager pairs of outstretched hands.Cries of“Over here!” rang through the warm kitchen. Dad’ s active participation in this game was remarkable to me, since he had advanced Alzheimer′s disease. This disease had robbed him of many memories and the recognition of people, places mid points in time. In my younger years, playing with Dad was rare. To his credit, Dad worked hard and provided for us.He was very private and never showed nor shared much emotion. His game of choice was chess, which he did eventually teach me how to play.As an adult,I had become a caregiver and watched helplessly as Dad declined. Connecting moments between father and son had been few and far before he took the basketball. I’m not sure how long we played catch. What I do know is that our game ended all too soon, and it was time to face the reality of dirty dishes piled high on countertops. The moment, though, will certainly last forever. On this Christmas,Dad gave me a special memory—one that I will always treasure. 41.Which of the following statements is true according to the first two paragraphs?

Are you a bookworm? Is your head stuck in a book for long? If so, that’ s a good thing. There are many benefits to reading.Getting into a good novel improves our literacy(读写能力).But who or what encourages us to pick up a book and start reading? Of course, when we are young, our parents and teachers inspire us by introducing us to characters that we love—or love to hate. And there are the authors—the people who invent and write about these characters.Good writing can really catch our imagination. One modern-day children’s author is J.K.Rowling,who’s known for her books about the wizard,Harry Potter.Last year she was named as a‘literacy hero’for her part in improving people’ s love of reading. The UK’s National Literacy Trust awarded her the title for“turning a generation of children into readers.” The Trust also honoured schoolchildren,a librarian and teachers for their effort in trying to get people to read. The actor, Henry Winkler, who has dyslexia(阅读障碍), Was also named for the books he has written about a boy with learning difficulties. Reading books is more than an enjoyable pastime ; it can also help people in difficult

circumstances. The author Pat Winslow worked as a writer in prisons and found reading and discussing stories helped prisoners reflect on their patterns of behaviour. She says“Very often we would have discussions about the moral compass of a character, what was the motivation of somebody, why did they behave that way?” Today I like to read factual books such as biographies, where you get an insight into the lives of important and well-known people.I also enjoy looking at travel books and learning about journeys and new destinations. It's a good substitute if you can’t visit in person. But the main benefit of reading is the improvement it brings to our literacy. The more we do it, the better we get and who knows—one day you may become the next Tolstoy,Jackie Collins or even William Shakespeare. 46.How does the author introduce the topic of this text? Spending hours playing violent video games prevents teenagers from their moral growth, a study has found. It is thought that regular touch to violence and lack of contact with the outside world makes it harder for them to tell right from wrong. They also struggle to trust other people, and see the world from their viewpoints. Researchers from Brock University in Ontario found that those who spend more than three hours each day in front of the screen are particularly unlikely to have developed the ability to empathise(同情). The Canadian researchers surveyed 109 boys and girls, aged 13 and 14,about whether they played video games, which games they liked, and how long they spent playing them.Their findings found that 88 percent of teens said they played games, and more than half admitted to playing games everyday.Violent games were among the most popular. The teenagers also filled in a questionnaire designed to measure their moral development. For example, they were asked how important it is to save the life of a friend. Previous studies have suggested that a person’s moral judgement goes through four phases as they grow from children and enter adulthood.By the age of 13 or 14,scientists claim young people should be entering the third stage, and be able to empathise with others and take their viewpoints into account. The research found that this stage appeared to be delayed in teenagers who regularly played violent video games. It is also thought that teenagers who play games regularly did not spend enough time in the real world to learn to take other’s thoughts into consideration.Researcher Mirjana Bajovic said: “The present results indicate that some teenagers;who spent three or more hours a day playing violent video games, are deprived of such opportnnities. ”Writing in the journal

Educational Media International.the researchers added: “Touch to violence in video games may influence the development of moral reasoning because violence is not only presented as acceptable but is also justified and rewarded. ” They concluded that rather than trying to enforce an‘unrealistic’ban on the games, parents and teachers should encourage teenagers to do charity work and take up after-school activities. 61.What would be the result of playing violent video games? A.Making teens easy to get along with. B.Helping teens make more good friends. C.Causing teens easier to tell right from wrong. D.Getting teens hard to take others into consideration. 62.Why did the Canadian researchers carry out the studies? A.To discuss how to save the life of a friend. B.To measure teenagers’moral development. C.To enrich teenagers’awareness of social life. D.To develop teenagers’ability to communicate. 63.What call we know from the words of Mirjana Bajovic? A.Vio1ent games cost teens social experiences in real life. B.Playing games regularly will improve teens’intelligence. C.Playing games inspires teens to develop fast. D.Playing games makes teens help others. 64.What can be inferred from the text? A.Parents and teachers should let teens go online. B.Playing video games should be forbidden among teens. C.Game designers should be kindly treated and rewarded. D.Teens should be encouraged to do more meaningful things. 65.Which of the following would be the best title of the text? A.Violent video games affect teenagers’moral development B.Vio1ent video games delay teenagers’physical growth C.Violent video games should be forbidden among teenagers D.Violent video games reduce teenagers’chance in the real world
