Rubik's Cube

The invention of the cube

The Rubik‘s Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ern? Rubik. Originally called the “Magic Cube“, the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp in 1980. Rubik obtained Hungarian patent （专利）HU170062 for his "Magic Cube" in 1975.

He did not realize that he had created a puzzle until the first time he scrambled his new Cube and then tried to restore it.

Although it is widely reported that the Cube was built as a teaching tool to help his students understand 3D objects, his actual purpose was solving the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart.

Other Cubes

In 1986：The 2X2X2 Cube and 4X4X4 Cube In 2003： Greek inventor Panagiotis Verdes patented a method of creating cubes beyond the 5×5×5, up to 11×11×11

Popularity of the cubes

The cubes popular in 1980’s, and from 1980 to 1982, about 2,000,000 cubes were sold out in all. An English boy Patrick Bossert wrote a book : You Can Do The Cube(ISBN 0-14-031483-0) in 1981, and 150,000 of this books were sold out. In the middle of the 1980s’ amost one fifth people played the cube in the world. The cube is popular now also, and the popular culture of cubes are also in the art and so on.

The world records

The current world record for single time on a Rubik's Cube was set by Feliks Zemdegs, who had a best time of 6.24 seconds at the Kubaroo Open 2011. The world record for average time per solve is also currently held by Feliks, who set 7.87 seconds.

Some other records

Feliks Zemdegs

Feliks Zemdegs (born 20 December 1995 in Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian Rubik's Cube speedsolver. The surname is Latvian. He bought his first cube in April 2008 inspired by speedcubing videos and tutorials on Youtube. He won the first competition he attended, the New Zealand Championships (July 2009) with an average of 13.74 seconds in the final round. He also won 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, 3x3 Blindfolded, and 3x3 One-Handed. At his next competition, the Melbourne Summer Open (January 2010), he set his first world records for 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 average, with times of 9.21 seconds and 42.01 seconds respectively. Since then he has broken more records as listed in the table below.

Let’s do the 3x3x3 cubes

There are 8! (40,320) ways to arrange the corner cubes. Let’s learn the notation first: F (Front): the side currently facing the solver B (Back): the side opposite the front U (Up): the side above or on top of the front side D (Down): the side opposite the top, underneath the Cube L (Left): the side directly to the left of the front R (Right): the side directly to the right of the front When a prime symbol ( ′ ) follows a letter, it denotes a face turn counter-clockwise, while a letter without a prime symbol denotes a clockwise turn.

Then we start to learn the CFOP CFOP is the most popular method to solve the cube :CROSS－>F2L>OLL->PLL 1:cross 2:F2L：（First two Layer) 3:OLL：（Orient Last Layer ） 4:PLL：（Position Last Layer ）

1:cross:no formula and you can do it easily

2:F2L

Your goal

If you find these, you can use the formula under the picture.

2-1:（R U R'）

2-2:（F'U'F）

（R U R'） U' （R U R'）

（F'U'F）U （F'U'F）

（R U R'）（R U R'） U' （R U R'）

Your goal

2:F2L

3-1：（U' F' U F ）（U R U' R'）

3-2:（U R U' R'）（U' F' U F）

You can use the 3-1 or 3-2 first ,then you can use 3-1 or 3-2 one more time.

3:OLL

Your goal

4：F （R U R' U'）F'

2X(4)

2X(4)+U+(4)

3:OLL

Your goal

5-1：R' U2 R U R' U R

5-2：U' R U'U' R' U' R U' R'

(5-2)+(5-1)

(5-1)+u’+(5-2) (5-1)+(5-1)

(5-1)+(5-2)

(5-2)+u2+(5-2)

Or you can use (5-1) again and again to do that

4:PLL

Your goal

You can use formula 6 again and again to do that. formula 6: R B' R F2 R' B R F2 R2

4:PLL

Your goal

7:（R U' R）（U R U R）（U' R' U' R2）

2X(7)

(7)+U+(7)

(7)+U’+(7)

Thank you !

And let’s have a match of cube.
